Song Lyric Sunday: Philosophical – ‘The Philosopher’s Song’

Now, I have a bit of a pedantic problem with this week’s Song Lyric Sunday, where we are asked to showcase a ‘philosophical’ song.

Some readers may be aware that I actually have a university degree in Philosophy, albeit from over 50 years ago. Although that’s not so long that I still didn’t automatically respond with the philosopher’s stock reply to almost anything: ‘It depends what you mean by…’

Off the top of my head, I could not think of a single ‘correct’ (although it depends what you mean by…) response. An internet search naturally threw up plenty of lists of soi-dit ‘philosophical’ songs. However, to me it seemed that a more accurate description of most of them would be ‘introspective’ – in many cases a polite way of saying navel-gazing. Introspection is categorically not the same thing as philosophy: end of.

So that left me in a quandary: how to make my regular contribution without feeling like I’d somehow ‘sold out’. The answer, not entirely surprisingly, lay in the works of Monty Python.

Even the usually very reliable AZLyrics was stumped on this one, but fortunately the accompanying video shows the words fairly accurately and also, at the end, includes a reasonably succinct description of the philosophical views of those thinkers mentioned in the song.

As an added bonus, I’ve also included another Monty Python tilt at philosophy – the International Philosophy Final – particularly hilarious if you happened to be a Philosophy undergraduate in 1971.

  1. ๐Ÿ˜…That was hilarious, I love the song, especially: Descartes drunken fart ‘I drink therefore I am’ and the philosopher’s football match, only those great minds could have envisioned that – Marx running on as a substitute๐Ÿ˜ƒThat’s made my day – so thank you๐Ÿ™Œ

  2. What a fun presentation. Other than a couple of late-night reruns of the show in my youth, I am not at all familiar with Monte Python- although I have a general overview of the kind of humor the name implies. I had not seen either of these videos- but I did enjoy your discussion- as I too felt there was a lot of interpretation necessary to come up with a song that fit the prompt.
