This week for Song Lyric Sunday, Jim is looking for songs that contain the words ‘hard’ or ‘work’. I must admit that ‘Work Harder Day’ is a new one on me; we live and learn. I’ll also freely concede that hard work is something to which I have a strong natural aversion. However, for the purposes of this post I’ll accommodate it.
I won’t be the only one who, on seeing the prompt, immediately thought of The Beatles and ‘Hard Day’s Night’ and I’m not going to fight that initial instinct. However, instead of the Beatles themselves, I thought it might be fun to put up the video of Peter Sellers’ alternative version, in which he brilliantly channels the great actor Laurence Olivier’s film portrayal of King Richard III, teasing out some innuendos that were almost certainly never there in the first place.
t’s been a hard day’s night, and I’ve been working like a dog
It’s been a hard day’s night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
You know I work all day to get you money to buy you things
And it’s worth it just to hear you say you’re going to give me everything
So why on earth should I moan, cos when I get you alone
You know I feel OK
When I’m home everything seems to be right
When I’m home feeling you holding me tight, tight, yeah
It’s been a hard day’s night, and I’ve been working like a dog
It’s been a hard day’s night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright owww
So why on earth should I moan, cos when I get you alone
You know I feel OK
When I’m home everything seems to be right
When I’m home feeling you holding me tight, tight, yeah
It’s been a hard day’s night, and I’ve been working like a dog
It’s been a hard day’s night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
You know I feel alright
You know I feel alright

Never having been a particular fan of Peter Sellers, but nevertheless fresh off the back of watching every available episode of STARZ The White Queen/Princess series, I had to dive in to hear a Richard III-esque adaptation of A Hard Day’s Night.
Excellent choice.
๐ An absolute classic. Brilliant choice.
Thanks for sharing this very interesting cover.
One of the earliest parodies of a pop song I believe? ๐
interesting …I like it
