What a lovely topic Jim has set us for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday – hugs, kisses and embraces.
Although you’ll never shift me from my first love of ‘classic’ and psychedelic rock,I can still recognise a great tune from other and earlier genres and this standard fits the bill perfectly – especially when, as here, delivered beautifully by the wonderful Ella Fitzgerald.
The song comes from the 1930 musical ‘Girl Crazy’, with music by George Gershwin and lyrics by brother Ira. Along with ‘I Got Rhythm’, it’s the only song from that oeuvre that’s really stood the test of time, and I suspect it always will.
Embrace me
My sweet embraceable you
Embrace me
You, irreplaceable you
Just one look at you
My heart grows tipsy in me
You and you alone
Bring out the gypsy in me
I love all
The many charms about you
Above all
I want my arms around you
Don’t be a naughty baby
Come to mama, come to mama do
My sweet embraceable you
Don’t be a naughty baby
Come to mama, come to mama do
My sweet embraceable you
Written by George and Ira Gershwin
A really lovely song.
I used the same song and was tempted to use Ella’s version, because as far as I’m concerned no one does the standards like Ella. I chose Billie Holiday’s version instead, but I stand by my “no one does the standards like Ella.”
No argument from me, sir
