We have to thank Felicia Denise for coming up with this week’s theme of ‘Unity’ for Helen’s Song Lyric Sunday challenge.
This time I’ve followed my preferred route of going with the first song that came to mind when I saw the prompt. In this case it’s the opening track on Jefferson Airplane’s 1969 album ‘Volunteers’.
This is another favourite from what you could call my angry young man period. I also featured it when I was working through ‘My Music Lexicon’ last year, and make no apology for doing so again. There aren’t many songs that can justifiably be described as an anthem of a generation, but this is one of them.
Snowflakes and others of a sensitive disposition might want to look away now.
We can be together
Ah you and me
We should be together
We are all outlaws in the eyes of America
In order to survive we steal, cheat, lie, forge, fuck, hide and deal
We are obscene, lawless, hideous, dangerous, dirty, violent…and young
But we should be together
Come on all you people standing around
Our life’s too fine to let it die and
We can be together
All your private property is
Target for your enemy
And your enemy is…We
We are forces of chaos and anarchy
Everything they say we are we are
And we are very proud of ourselves
Up against the wall
Up against the wall motherfuckers
Tear down the walls
Tear down the walls
Come on now together
Get it on together
Everybody together
We should be together
We should be together my friends
We can be together
We will be
We must begin here and now
A new continent of earth and fire
Come on now gettin’ higher and higher
Tear down the walls, tear down the walls
Won’t you try
I feel like I’ve heard this song before, but I know I haven’t. I loved everything about it! Great pick for this week. Thanks so much for sharing!
As Wordsworth said: “Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive/ But to be young was very heaven”
Beautiful!
I love the guitar.
Hell yeah
This is how you write an anti-establishment song!
Groups like JA were good at them because what sounded like happy-go-lucky folk music on the surface was in fact, a go f*ck yourself rant! 😂😂
Good pick!
I know what you mean, although I think this particular example is about as subtle as a firing squad. Country Joe was good at the happy-go-lucky rant.
Well now. I might have heard this tune before but for sure I’ve never paid attention to the lyrics. Thanks for this!
