An intriguing theme set by Jim this week for Song Lyric Sunday: ‘Hamlet/Magic/Mystery/Supernatural/Trick. So lots of scope for artistic interpretation – just like ‘Hamlet’ itself.
This song by Lieber and Stoller surely fits the brief and was was originally a hit for US group The Clovers in 1959, but this is the version that I grew up with on Merseyside in the early sixties, performed by local group The Searchers
I took my troubles down to Madame Ruth
You know that gypsy
With the gold cap tooth
She’s got a pad down at 34th and Vine
Sellin’ little bottles of Love Potion #9
I told her that I was a flop with chicks
I been this way since 1956
She looked at my palm
And she made a magic sign
She said
“Whatcha need is
A bottle of Love Potion #9”
She bent down and turned around
And gave me a wink
She said I’m gonna make it up
Right here in the sink
It smelled like turpentine
And looked like India ink
I held my nose
I closed my eyes
I took a drink
I didn’t know if it was day or night
I started kissing everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop
Down at 34th and Vine
He broke my little bottle of
Love Potion #9
She bent down and turned around
And gave me a wink
She said I’m gonna make it up
Right here in the sink
It smelled like turpentine
And looked like India ink
I held my breath and closed my eyes
I took a drink
I didn’t know if it was day or night
I started kissin’ everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop
Down on 34th and Vine
He broke my little bottle of
Love Potion #9

Great song, thanks for picking out this treasure.
I had never heard The Clovers’ version until long after I heard The Searchers’. I think the latter do a better job of it.
I remember this song fondly. I love the videos where the band members are camera shy. Wonderful memory and choice for the prompt.
Good song! It was my brother’s fave. Thanks!
I remember this! Great choice š
