Song Lyric Sunday: Afterlife – ‘Presence of the Lord’

This week, we seek songs about God or the afterlife. Personally, I don’t believe in either of those things but, as Martin Luther reportedly said (although he probably didn’t): “why should the devil have al the best tunes?”

The short-lived supergroup Blind Faith released their only – eponymous – album in 1969, when I was seventeen and very much into this kind of music. I have an abiding memory of being at a party and one of my schoolmates, no doubt awash with drink like the rest of us, sitting on the floor pretending (with little success) to be Ginger Baker when this came on.

To tighten up the link to the brief a little further, it’s worth pointing out that at that time Eric Clapton was commonly referred to by his fans as ‘God’.

I have finally found a way to live just like I never could before
I know that I don’t have much to give, but I can open any door
Everybody knows the secret, everybody knows the score
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I have finally found a way to live in the colour of the Lord

I have finally found a place to live just like I never could before
And I know I don’t have much to give, but soon I’ll open any door
Everybody knows the secret, everybody knows the score

I have finally found a place to live, oh, in the presence of the Lord
In the presence of the Lord

I have finally found a way to live, just like I never could before
And I know I don’t have much to give, but I can open any door
Everybody knows the secret, I said everybody knows the score
I have finally found a way to live in the colour of the Lord
In the colour of the Lord
