This week, Jim is looking for a song based on true events.
My tertiary education alma mater is the University of Kent at Canterbury, where I studied (among other things) from 1970 to 1973. During my first year, a fellow student was an American who was doing a one-year masters course in Philosophy. I remember he told us that his friends were most concerned when he told them that he was going to Kent University.
Not surprisingly, considering that in May of 1970 the Ohio National Guard had murdered (there is no other word for it) four students at Kent State University in Ohio. Neil Young wrote this song about it.
Tin soldiers and Nixon coming
We’re finally on our own
This summer I hear the drumming
Four dead in Ohio
Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?
Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?
Tin soldiers and Nixon coming
We’re finally on our own
This summer I hear the drumming
Four dead in Ohio
Written by Neil Young
As social history goes, songs don’t come much better than this one.
Great choice, it fits the theme perfectly. Such a shame that this happened, all the senseless deaths.
A very apt choice for today’s theme. Captures the essence of what unraveled. Thanks for joining in
Such a shocking incident…. We need to remember all these incidents…. What better way than a song.💜
Still gives me chills to think of soldiers cutting students down. Peaceful students. Innocent students who had nothing to do with the protest that was going on. I remember Chryssie Hynde and Mark Mothersbaugh were both from that area and may have even been there when it happened, iirc.
