Yee haw.
Genre of the week for song Lyric Sunday this time is ‘country’. I think I have a basic understanding of what that is. However, on further reflection there is a whole range of sub-genres, as with last week’s ‘Metal’ (but not like metal obviously).
I would not say that I’m a great fan of country music in general. To me it summons up – no doubt cliched – images of middle-aged people in check shirts and ten-gallon hats banging on about unrequited love or the fact that their dog (dawg?) just died.
Even worse, there is the unforgettable – although I really wish it was – ‘Drop-kick me Jesus, through the goalposts of life’. I swear I am not making that up – check it out on Youtube.
But this is surely an acceptable side of country music, and if it’s off an album called ‘Nashville Skyline’, it must be country, right?
Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Whatever colors you have in your mind
I’ll show them to you and you’ll see them shine.
Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile
Until the break of day, let me see you make him smile
His clothes are dirty but his hands are clean
And you’re the best thing that he’s ever seen.
Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile
Why wait any longer for the world to begin
You can have your cake and eat it too
Why wait any longer for the one you love
When he’s standing in front of you.
Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still ahead
I long to see you in the morning light
I long to reach for you in the night
Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still ahead.

Another great choice š
Lay, lady, lay is a folk song with a country flavor sort of a lazy country-pop groove. Nice selection today.
