Song Lyric Sunday: In memoriam – ‘Mother’

Song Lyric Sunday this week is looking for songs written as tributes for someone. This heart-rending piece by John Lennon was the first example that came into my mind.

I think it’s quite well known that John Lennon’s childhood was neither ‘normal’ or happy. Apart from the fact that he was born during a German air raid on Liverpool, in October 1940, his parents separated when he was only four years old. His father, a merchant seaman, wasn’t around much and when his mother Julia remarried, John went to live with his Aunt Mimi. Julia was killed in a traffic accident in 1958 and John never really got over it, although this song is an attempt to.

Mother, you had me but I never had you
I wanted you, you didn’t want me
So I, I just gotta tell you
Goodbye, goodbye

Father, you left me but I never left you
I needed you, you didn’t need me
So I, I just gotta tell you
Goodbye, goodbye

Children, don’t do what I have done
I couldn’t walk and I tried to run
So I, I just gotta tell you
Goodbye, goodbye

Mamma, don’t go
Daddy, come home
