This week, we’ve been asked to feature a song that’s appeared on a ‘Greatest Hits’ or ‘Best Of’ compilation album. Given that any artiste(s) worth their salt will have had at least one of these released at some point, the pool of potential choices is certainly both wide and deep.
Rather than plump for something mainstream or famously best-selling, however, I’ve gone with a rather more obscure – undeservedly, in my view – choice: Family and the inimitable voice of Roger Chapman.
One of my fondest musical memories is seeing them live at my university – great music, and boy did they know how to play into the typical raucous atmosphere of a college gig.
Lay down easy, stars in my eyes
Try not telling too many lies
Wake up feeling, not foolish or wise
And life goes with me, no matter what size
Now some seek Jesus, of flags they can wave
Won′t touch nothing, unless it’s been saved
But I say your neighbor deserves much more faith
And answer to yourself when you misbehave
You may think I′m wasting my time
Think what you think, you know I don’t mind
But if I don’t pick up what you choose to find
I′ll be with you in my own time
I′ll be with you in my own time
Mine is my freedom you take, I’ll defy
Laugh till I′m tired, sing till I cry
Cause life is a moment you pass with a sigh
Never comes back sure as yesterday’s by
Written by Roger Chapman and John Whitney
Thanks for sharing – never heard of this or the band before 🙌
No one quite like Roger, was there!
New group and a new song for me, but it was very enjoyable.
Family were really good but didn’t quite make it to the ‘first division’.
New song to me, still unsure how I feel about it. Good share.
New group, new song. The singer reminds me of the Mayor of Munchkinland!
This is definitely new to me. However, their takes me back to a time when I just listened to whatever I could get my hands on. We’d raid our parents collections trying to find that gold. Hoping to hear, “Hey Man, what’s that?”
