Song Lyric Sunday: Debut – ‘Re-Make/Re-Model’

This week, Jim’s looking for a song from a debut album. By definition, there’s a massive field to choose from: after all, any band or artiste who’s ever put out an album (I’m struggling not to type ‘LP’ here) has had a debut LP (I give up).

However, very few have announced themselves to the world as a major new presence with such unique ferocity as Roxy Music did in June 1972, with their eponymously titled debut oeuvre. This was Side 1, Track 1 (there I go again…).

I tried but I could not find a way
Looking back all I did was look away
Next time is the best time we all know
But if there is no next time where to go, go?
Go, go! Go, go! Go, go! Go, go!

She’s the sweetest queen I’ve ever seen
See here she comes, see what I mean?
I could talk, talk, talk, talk myself to death
But I believe I would only waste my breath
Ooh, show me

I tried but I could not find a way
Looking back all I did was look away
Next time is the best time we all know
But if there is no next time where to go, go?
Go, go! Go, go! Go, go! Go, go!

She’s the sweetest queen I’ve ever seen
See here she comes, see what I mean?
I could talk, talk, talk, talk myself to death
But I believe I would only waste my breath

  1. They knew how to announce themselves, didn’t they. And here in the UK we didn’t even get Virginia Plain on the album like they did in the States!

  2. What a great choice. I wasn’t introduced to Roxy Music until much later so this was not a song I was familiar with, but I enjoy the band and this was a great introduction.

  3. Great song…I like this era of the band the best…they could be right in your face.

  4. Roxy Music stood out from other groups due to their fusion of diverse musical influences, their sophisticated and glamorous visual image, and their pioneering approach to electronic composition. Great choice and thanks for participating again, Deadhead.

  5. This is a great opener on a debut album. Really sets the tone doesn’t it. I admit to being hopelessly in love with track 2, Ladytron, which has some of the sharpest lyrics about users I’ve ever seen written. Love your choice this week.
