Song Lyric Sunday: Readies – ‘Black Money’

The rather vulgar subject of money is the theme for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday. Well, it’s either that or taxes, which holds no appeal – it just encourages them.

A little over a year ago, I used the song ‘Doctor, doctor’ by The Thompson Twins for an SLS contribution. I explained then that it was one of two songs on the British Airways ‘recent hits’ playlist of the late eighties that I always seemed to wake up to. This is the other one…

Do you deal in black money
Do you deal in black money (do you deal, yeah)
Do you deal in black money
Do you deal in black money (do you deal, wo-oah yeah)

Fortunes find you
Cross out every emotion
Standing right behind
A shadow of devotion
Somebody else’s life
Cannot be mine

But when you love someone
And they don’t love you in return
When you love someone
You’ve got money to burn

I believe that
Nothing could come between us
Magic potions
Won’t you save them for dreamers
Somebody else’s life cannot be mine

Give me some love
But don’t waste my time
(Wooah, black money, yeah!)
I’ll love you again
But you must be mine
Oh, black money, yeah (Ah, ha ha! Black money, yeah)
Give me some love
But don’t waste my time
(Wooah, black money, yeah!)

Fortunes find you
Cross out every emotion
Standing right behind
A shadow of devotion
Somebody else’s life
Cannot be mine

  1. I still remember the first time I saw Boy George on tv. He was something. Listening to this song today I remember ‘the him’ from the 80’s fondly. Thank you for this reminder.

  2. I don’t think I’ve ever heard this one before. Boy George was a much better singer than people gave him credit for, and this song really suits his voice.
