Song Lyric Sunday: Noir – ‘Black Magic Woman’

For this week’s Song Lyric Sunday, Jim asks us to present a song whose title contains the word ‘black’. Well, fair enough, there’s a lot of them about, including many that I wouldn’t be ashamed of putting forward for the challenge.

However, for various reasons I settled on ‘Black Magic Woman’. Although this was written by Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac (when they were good), I’ve chosen the Santana version for the accompanying video. Also for various reasons.

As I recall, Santana first came to my attention when I went to see ‘Woodstock: The Movie’ and I was immediately attracted to their characteristic sinuous – and, indeed, sensuous – rhythms. I certainly went out and bought the ‘Abraxas’ album, on which this is featured.

[Confession Time: Having completed this draft, on impulse I searched my back catalogue of SLS posts and discovered that I’d already used this song back in 2017 for the theme of ‘magic’. Well, it deserves another airing.]

Got a black magic woman
Got a black magic woman

I’ve got a black magic woman
Got me so blind I can’t see
That she’s a black magic woman
She’s tryin’ to make a devil out of me

Don’t turn your back on me, baby
Don’t turn your back on me, baby

Yes, don’t turn your back on me baby
Stop messin’ around with your tricks
Don’t turn your back on me baby
You just might pick up my magic sticks

Got your spell on me baby
Got your spell on me baby

Yes you got your spell on me baby
Turning my heart into stone
I need you so bad – magic woman
I can’t leave you alone

  1. Excellent song choice and definitely would have been among my first choices had I decided to follow the directions this week. First song of the day, so you know it’s gonna be a good one!

  2. Gregg Rolie who was the original lead vocalist of Santana, sang the lead vocals on Black Magic Woman. I loved the video with the 3 drummers, great choice today, Deadhead.
