Initially, I was stumped by Jim’s challenge for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday. He’s looking for a song used as the title of a movie.
The only one I could think of at first was ‘Saturday Night Fever’ – except, of course, the song’s title is just ‘Night Fever’. Then there’s most of the James Bond movies: quite a few of the theme songs could be described as ‘iconic’ I suppose, but not really my cup of tea, with the exception of ‘Live And Let Die’.
And then a vague recollection stirred in the back of my mind. Wasn’t there a movie called ‘Across The Universe’ where the action took place against a soundtrack of Beatles songs? Indeed there was, released back in 2007. I’ve never seen it, and it’s fair to say that the critics were divided, but I’ll take any excuse to play what was apparently one of John Lennon’s favourite compositions.
Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass, they slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind
Possessing and caressing me
Jai guru deva om
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes
They call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a restless wind
Inside a letter box they
Tumble blindly as they make their way
Across the universe
Jai guru deva om
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Sounds of laughter shades of life are ringing
Through my open ears inciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which shines around me like a million suns
And calls me on and on across the universe
Jai guru deva om
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Written by John Lennon (officially Lennon & McCartney)
What a unique choice. I had never heard of this movie. Thank you for the introduction.
A lovely song, long time a favourite of mine too. I haven’t seen the movie either – I really should seek it out!
Nice track. David Bowie sang a version on his ‘Young Americans’ album
Haven’t seen the movie, but I’m always leery of feature films and documentaries that try to cash in on the Beatles. I was forced to watch “Yesterday” and thought it atrocious, on many levels. But “Across the Universe” is one of the few highlights of “Let it Be,” and seeing your lyric transcription emphasizes what a poet Lennon was. (Can’t envision Paul stringing together words like this.)
Great selection for today as this is really a beautiful song and I always wanted to watch this movie after seeing the trailer.
I’d not heard of the movie, but I’ve loved this song for a long time. Great choice, and so good to hear again. 🙂
Excellent choice. The opening chords of the song are so lovely. Thanks for this; now I have to watch the movie again.
