Song Lyric Sunday: Band Reunion – ‘Comfortably Numb’

There’s a song by Sade titled “Never As Good As The First Time”. I’m not sure this is universally applicable, but it is probably true in the majority of cases when it comes to once great bands getting back together.

The case with regard to Pink Floyd is a moot one. The breakup was acrimonious and the reunion too brief to give a definitive answer to whether it would ultimately have proved to be ‘a good thing’. It’s also pretty clear from the body language on the video that Gilmour and Waters can barely stand the sight of each other.

But the original members (at least the post-Syd ones) did get back together in a short one-off performance for Live 8 in 2005, after a gap of over 24 years: a tantalising glimpse of a quarter century of what could have been.

Anyway, this is definitively the last song of that short set. Just one of their many timeless masterpieces.

Hello
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone at home?

Come on now
I hear you’re feeling down
Well, I can ease your pain
Get you on your feet again

Relax
I’ll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re saying
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I’ve got that feeling once again
I can’t explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb

I have become comfortably numb

O.K.
Just a little pin prick
There’ll be no more ah!
But you may feel a little sick

Can you stand up?
I do believe it’s working, good
That’ll keep you going through the show
Come on, it’s time to go

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re saying
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
I have become comfortably numb

  1. Floyd, definitely the band of the day on this challenge. And a well-deserved win that. A soundtrack to an entire generation- and then some. This song is one of my favorites.

  2. Comfortably Numb describes a state of loss of muscle movement where a singer is anaesthetized before coming on stage.  Waters said that much of the song comes from something that really happened one evening when he was in Philadelphia.  Walters got hepatitis but he didn’t know it and when he talked to a doctor, the physician thought he was suffering from a severe stomachache, which was probably caused by nerves.  The doctor gave him a sedative so he could perform, but he was not able to focus.  On the stage, his hands were numb, and his vision was blurred, but none of this derailed the crowd, who continued to dance and sing.  Waters said that this felt like it was the longest two hours of his life, as he kept trying to do this show, but he couldn’t hardly lift his arm. Nice choice, as I always enjoy listening to this.

  3. Floyd will always hold a place in my heart; they possess a uniquely beautiful sound, one that could never be mistaken. This song is especially memorable for me as it was playing in the operating room while I was being administered anesthesia for surgery. The things we remember!

    Thanks for a fabulous tune.
