In all honesty, there aren’t that many songs I can think of where I could be absolutely sure that I had the lyrics off pat, but that’s what Jim’s after for Song Lyric Sunday this week.
Like many crusties, I probably have clearer recall of things from half a century ago than of what I had for lunch yesterday, so it pretty much had to be something from The Beatles – in this case, from the soundtrack of ‘A Hard Day’s Night’, which was released in 1964, when I was twelve years old.
Officially, it’s a Lennon/McCartney joint effort, but it was John who wrote this.
If I fell in love with you
Would you promise to be true
And help me understand
Cause I’ve been in love before
And I found that love was more
Than just holding hands
If I give my heart to you
I must be sure
From the very start
That you would love me more than her
If I trust in you oh please
Don’t run and hide
If I love you too oh please
Don’t hurt my pride like her
Cause I couldn’t stand the pain
And I would be sad if our new love was in vain
So I hope you see that I
Would love to love you
And that she will cry
When she learns we are two
Cause I couldn’t stand the pain
And I would be sad if our new love was in vain
So I hope you see that I
Would love to love you
And that she will cry
When she learns we are two
If I fell in love with you
Written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney
Nice video and although I did see the film A Hard Day’s Night, there was so much going on in it to distract you from how good the songs were. Great choice and a fun song to sing along with.
What a classic, 💞
A lovely choice, and one that I know well 😊
Oh yes! Great song I always like hearing. 🙂
