This week, Song Lyric Sunday’s tour of the main instruments of modern music reaches the bass guitar – often overlooked, or even unheard, but absolutely essential – you’d certainly miss it if it wasn’t there.
I could name this tune in one, and I’m willing to bet that most people of a certain age and musical predilection could do the same.
Been dazed and confused for so long it’s not true
Wanted a woman, never bargained for you
Lots of people talk and few of them know
Soul of a woman was created below, yeah
You hurt and abuse telling all of your lies
Run ’round, sweet baby, Lord, how they hypnotize
Sweet little baby, I don’t know where you’ve been
Gonna love you, baby, here I come again
Every day I work so hard bringing home my hard earned pay
Try to love you, baby, but you push me away
Don’t know where you’re going, only know just where you’ve been
Sweet little baby, I want you again
Been dazed and confused for so long it’s not true
Wanted a woman, never bargained for you
Take it easy, baby, let them say what they will
Tongue wag so much when I send you the bill

Apart from featuring the iconic bass intro, this video is also noteworthy for the way in which John Paul Jones and John Bonham keep the metaphorical train on the tracks while Page and Plant go off-piste (and yes, I know that’s a mixed metaphor, but you know what I mean).
Great choice and this is my first time watching this video, which is fabulous. It must have not been easy for John Paul Jones being in the sane group with Bonham, Page and Plant taking all of the attention. I just read that Jimmy Page is a satanist.
I don’t know whether he still is, but he did buy the former home of Aleister Crowley, the notorious British occultist.
A great choice for the theme. Classic rock at its best.
