This week we’re looking for a song that featured on the long-running BBC TV programme Top Of The Pops (or on Ready, Steady Go, which was even cooler – and if the scope had been extended to the unmissable Old Grey Whistle Test, well, the sky would have been the limit).
Anyway, there was never a moment’s doubt as to what my choice was going to be. I have a very distinct memory of this tune – one of my favourites by The Who – being introduced on TOTP by the illustrious John Peel. Even better, the accompanying video is that actual performance, which somebody has very kindly remastered.
I know you’ve deceived me, now here’s a surprise
I know that you have ’cause there’s magic in my eyes
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
Oh yeah
If you think that I don’t know about the little tricks you’ve played
And never see you when deliberately you put things in my way
Well, here’s a poke at you
You’re gonna choke on it too
You’re gonna lose that smile
Because all the while
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
Oh yeah
You took advantage of my trust in you when I was so far away
I saw you holding lots of other guys and now you’ve got the nerve to say
That you still want me
Well, that’s as may be
But you gotta stand trial
Because all the while
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
Oh yeah
I know you’ve deceived me, now here’s a surprise
I know that you have ’cause there’s magic in my eyes
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
Oh yeah
The Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal are mine to see on clear days
You thought that I would need a crystal ball to see right through the haze
Well, here’s a poke at you
You’re gonna choke on it too
You’re gonna lose that smile
Because all the while
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
And miles and miles and miles and miles

Song Lyric Sunday 16 June 2024
Great song from a great band. If Jim is watching, the OGWT would be another good pick for a theme.
December 22, 2024 – A song that was played on the British TV Show Old Grey Whistle Test suggested by the only deadhead in the hameau
Thanks, Jim. That should be a real Christmas bonanza of great music. Anyone who was anyone played on that show!
I love your choice today and it must have been cool watching this show or being in the audience.
