Oh, I’ve been to ‘discos’ alright – if by that you mean standing around the edge of a Junior Common Room while a distinctly amateur DJ plays loud music and some people dance.
However, to the best of my knowledge I have only ever been to one actual ‘discotheque’ in my entire life. It was in Manchester in late 1973 and the only reason I was there was because I was on a two-day induction course for a new job. The class participants – all in their late teens and early twenties – decided they fancied a disco for the evening’s entertainment.
It was awful. The only redeeming feature was that the one song I can recall was David Bowie’s ‘Jean Genie’, played at satisfactorily ear-splitting volume. You’d hardly call it disco though, would you?
However, you’d have to say that this is.
My baby moves at midnight
Goes right on ’til the dawn
My woman takes me higher
My woman keeps me warm
What you doin’ on your back? Ah
What you doin’ on your back? Ah
You should be dancing, yeah
Dancing, yeah
She’s juicy and she’s trouble
She gets it to me good
My woman gives me power
Goes right down to my blood
What you doin’ on your back? Ah
What you doin’ on your back? Ah
You should be dancing, yeah
Dancing, yeah
What you doin’ on your back? Ooh
What you doin’ on your back? Ah
You should be dancing, yeah
Dancing, yeah
My baby moves at midnight
Goes right on ’til the dawn, yeah
My woman takes me higher
My woman keeps me warm
What you doin’ on your back? Ah
What you doin’ on your back? Ah
You should be dancing, yeah
Dancing, yeah
What you doin’ on your back? Ah
What you doin’ on your back? Ah
You should be dancing, yeah
Dancing, yeah

I am very surprised that this is the only Bee Gees song so far today, because in my opinion, they owned Disco.
