Hellos and goodbyes are the themes of Song Lyric Sunday this week. Apart from The Beatles and their covering of both bases, I immediately thought of this Cole Porter classic.
Ev’ry time we say goodbye
I die a little
Ev’ry time we say goodbye
I wonder why a little
Why the Gods above me
Who must be in the know
Think so little of me
They allow you to go
When you’re near
There’s such an air of spring about it
I can hear a lark somewhere
Begin to sing about it
There’s no love song finer
But how strange the change
From major to minor
Ev’ry time we say goodbye
When you’re near
There’s such an air of spring about it
I can hear a lark somewhere
Begin to sing about it
There’s no love song finer
But how strange the change
From major to minor
Ev’ry time we say goodbye
Written by Cole Porter
…and why anyone should even think about covering this after Ella Fitzgerald has performed it so perfectly is entirely beyond me – as I have written before.
I love this song and love Ella singing it. 🙂
This was great! Wonderful choice ☺️
At the risk of repeating mself, no one, but no one, did the standards like Ella Fitzgerald.
