There’s no shortage of songs featuring numbers to meet Jim’s criteria for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday. When spoilt for choice I’m particularly likely to go for the first thing that popped into my head…
….but ‘Revolution #9′ off the Beatles’ White Album doesn’t really have lyrics. However, John Lennon’s ‘#9 Dream’ is much more approachable.
Perhaps too approachable, as when it was first released in 1974 it was described by the New Musical Express (NME) – the doyen of British music papers of the time (and far too hip to actually like anything) – as “a depressing hunk of sentimental bushwah with a chorus in phony Haitian.”
Harsh that; very harsh. Although there are no numbers in the lyrics.
So long ago
Was it in a dream?
Was it just a dream?
I know, yes I know
It seemed so very real
Seemed so real to me
Took a walk down the street
Through the heat whispered trees
I thought I could hear
Hear
Hear
Hear
Somebody call out my name (John)
As it started to rain
Two spirits dancing so strange
Ah! Bowakawa, pousse pousse
Ah! Bowakawa, pousse pousse
Ah! Bowakawa, pousse pousse
Dream, dream away
Magic in the air
Was magic in the air?
I believe, yes I believe
More I cannot say
What more can I say?
On a river of sound
Through the mirror go round, round
I thought I could feel
Feel
Feel
Feel
Music touching my soul
Something warm, sudden cold
The spirit dance was unfolding
Ah! Bowakawa, pousse pousse
Written by John Lennon
Lennon was obsessed with the number nine. This song has got to be one of his best. He looks so happy in this video, such a shame his life was cut short.
brilliant song, I almost went with this but I’m glad you gave it an airing.
Lovely tune. He is missed.
The white album also had “Revolution #1,” but I like this better.
Lovely choice for today.
