Song Lyric Sunday: Give & Take – ‘Get It On’

Well now…something of a guilty pleasure in response to Jim’s Song Lyric Sunday prompt this week, although almost fifty years on, I guess the Statute of Limitations has kicked in by now.

The early-seventies Glam Rock phenomenon presented a bit of a challenge for us long-haired hippy types. It was decidedly uncool to admit to actually liking any of it, but on the other hand how could you resist the sheer boppingness of this offering from Marc Bolan and T Rex?

I also rather liked The Sweet. Don’t judge me.

(look out for Elton John on piano in the video)

Well you’re dirty and sweet
Clad in black
Don’t look back
And I love you
You’re dirty and sweet oh yeah

Well you’re slim and you’re weak
You’ve got the teeth
Of the Hydra upon you
You’re dirty sweet
And you’re my girl

Get It On
Bang a gong
Get It On

Well you’re built like a car
You’ve got a hubcap
Diamond star halo
You’re built like a car
Oh yeah

You’re an untamed youth
That’s the truth
With your cloak full of eagles
You’re dirty sweet
And you’re my girl

Well you’re windy and wild
You’ve got the blues
In your shoes and your stockings
You’re windy and wild
Oh yeah

Well you’re built like a car
You’ve got a hubcap
Diamond star halo
You’re dirty sweet
And you’re my girl

Well you’re dirty and sweet
Clad in black
Don’t look back
And I love you
You’re dirty and sweet oh yeah

Well you dance when you walk
So let’s dance, take a chance
Understand me
You’re dirty sweet
And you’re my girl

  1. Great choice today! This song gets stuck in my head every time I hear it. Played in my car on the way to work the other day and interestingly enough I hit my keyboard with more enthusiasm than normal and the tune would not go away. Guess I will fold my laundry today with it stuck in my head. LOL

  2. I was in high school during the glam-rock era, and I was not very fond of it. I was more into rock with horns at that point, like the band Chase, who also had a song called “Get It On,” causing T.Rex’s record company to rename their song “Bang A Gong (Get It On).” This was a pretty good song, actually, and I didn’t think of T.Rex in the same way as, say, David Bowie…
