Jim at A Unique Title For Me has now taken over stewardship of Song Lyric Sunday from the much-missed Helen and has set the theme of ‘Occupation’ for this week. This is the first thing that came to mind when I saw what the theme was.
Madame and I used to listen to this much-covered Tim Hardin song a lot when we were just starting out together. Fortunately for all concerned, I was able to pursue other career options.
If I were a carpenter
And you were a lady,
Would you marry me anyway?
Would you have my baby?
If a tinker were my trade
would you still find me,
Carrying the pots I made,
Following behind me.
Save my love through loneliness,
Save my love for sorrow,
I’m given you my onliness,
Come give me your tomorrow.
If I worked my hands in wood,
Would you still love me?
Answer me babe, “Yes I would,
I’ll put you above me.”
If I were a miller
at a mill wheel grinding,
would you miss your color box,
and your soft shoe shining?
If I were a carpenter
and you were a lady,
Would you marry me anyway?
Would you have my baby?

Love this song.
Perfect for the prompt. I don’t think that I ever heard this song performed this slow before, but I like it as it lets you hear all the guitar strumming.
I love this song. Haven’t heard it in a while. Thanks for sharing it.
I love this song and I can’t believe I didn’t even think of it! Great choice!
Very good choice for the topic! I’ve heard it before by someone else, maybe Bobby Darin? Hadn’t heard the original one before. 🙂
Love the original version and this live rendition, slightly jazzier …
What great choice! 🙂
