Song Lyric Sunday: Shadow – ‘Standing In The Shadows Of Love’

This week’s Song Lyric Sunday, as set by Helen at ‘This Thing Called Life One Word At A Time’, required a bit of thought.

The theme is ‘shadow’. Nothing immediately sprang to mind, I must confess, so I went away and did something else until the brain came up with something while I wasn’t expecting it. As it usually does – eventually.

Thankfully, the grey matter didn’t let me down but suddenly sparked up with two possibilities. However, with my first choice, the Stones, having been snapped up – and quite rightly – by newepicauthor, my decision was made for me.

And why not some top-class Motown for a change? You all know this big hit by The Four Tops from 1966.

I’d run but there’s nowhere to go
‘Cause heartaches will follow me I know
Without your love, the love I need
It’s the beginning of the end for me

‘Cause you’ve taken away all my reasons for livin’
When you pushed aside all the love I’ve been giving
Now wait a minute

Didn’t I teach you right, didn’t I?
Didn’t I do the best I could, didn’t I?
So don’t you leave me

Standin’ in the shadow of love
I’m gettin’ ready for the heartaches to come
Don’t you see me standing in the shadow of love
Just tryin’ my best to get ready for the heartaches to come

All alone I’ll desperately be
With misery my only company
Come today, in fact come tomorrow

Sorrow, I ain’t got nothin’ but sorrow
Don’t your conscience bother you
How can you watch me cry after all I’ve done for you
Now hold a minute

No gal you ain’t gonna help me now
What did I do to cause all this grief
Now what’d I say to make you want to leave

  1. Great choice, I enjoyed listening to your selection. I originally started working on the American Beauty song ‘Till the Morning Comes’ because it has that line “When the shadows grow, it’ll do you fine”, but after spending over 90 minutes on this song I had to scrap it, because it was not going where I wanted it. Anyway several of my readers have recently told me that I need to write about groups other than the Grateful Dead.

  2. Love me some classic Motown. Thanks for this time travel. I love how so many different decades are visited through this SLS every week and this week is no exception.
