Song Lyric Sunday: Outer Space – ‘2,000 Light Years From Home’

When I first saw that this week’s prompt from Helen was ‘Outer Space’ my immediate thought was to recycle the latest instalment in ‘My Music Lexicon’ series with Pink Floyd’s ‘Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun’.

Even I’m not that idle, though, so here’s something that predates even that: from the 1967 album ‘Their Satanic Majesties Request’ (of which I was a proud owner). When I saw the Stones at Glastonbury a couple of years ago – on TV, I hasten to add – I was pleasantly surprised that this was included in their set.

Sun turnin’ ’round with graceful motion
We’re setting off with soft explosion
Bound for a star with fiery oceans
It’s so very lonely, you’re a hundred light years from home

Freezing red deserts turn to dark
Energy here in every part
It’s so very lonely, you’re six hundred light years from home

It’s so very lonely, you’re a thousand light years from home
It’s so very lonely, you’re a thousand light years from home

Bell flight fourteen you now can land
Seen you on Aldebaran, safe on the green desert sand
It’s so very lonely, you’re two thousand light years from home
It’s so very lonely, you’re two thousand light years from home
