‘Post a Holiday song that best describes you during the holiday season’ is this week’s challenge for Song Lyric Sunday.
Not easy: I can’t think of any songs about relaxing, eating well and watching the box. Or even a bracing country walk. Or getting over a heavy cold.
I have to say that this was the first song that popped into my head when I saw what the theme was, which is disturbing in a way. However, I would like to make it clear at the outset that in no way does this song constitute any kind of personal manifesto for the holiday period – or anytime, come to that.
No indeed. But this type of thing does go on quite a lot, especially at this time of year so, rather sadly, it sort of fits the brief. Even if I myself have never been attracted by the idea of getting off your face just for the sake of it, or because the calendar happens to show a particular date. Well, not for a good few years anyway.
Although I do admit to enjoying the occasional glass of fine wine on special occasions. Ahem.
Reading the lyrics, this is actually quite a poignant song about a poignant subject.
Wherever I go and whatever I do
I seem to spend some of my time
Trying to turn the black night, blue
Well I’m tired of it all
It’s the same thing every night
But the rhythm of the glass
Is stronger than the rhythm of night
Wide eyed and legless
I’ve gone and done it again
Wide eyed and legless
This world is full of my shame
Shame, I can’t get free from these chains
Oh, oh-oh
Wide eyed and legless
I’ve gone and done it again
Wide eyed and legless
This world is full of my shame
Shame, I can’t get free from these chains
Oh, oh-oh
I’ve been here before
But this time it feels like the end
I should’ve known better, I know
But my memory’s no friend
Well, I’ve tried every thing
That I know will get rid of this fling
And I can’t understand
Why I’m wide eyed and legless again
Wide eyed and legless
I’ve gone and done it again
Wide eyed and legless
This world is full of my shame
Shame, I can’t get free from these chains
Oh, oh-oh

But it’s also a nice tune:
What a great song! Thank you so much for sharing. 😉
This was a new one to me. Thanks for sharing. That’s why I love SLS, the exposure to music you’d never otherwise come across, unlikely anyway.
New music yes, but also for me a good reason to trawl through the mental archives for long-unconsidered trifles .
