First of all, I’m indebted to Linda at lindaghill.com for alerting me to this Song Lyric Sunday Challenge, hosted by Helene Spinosa. This is a great idea and I’m more than happy to play along.
No doubt I’m going to be giving my age away on a weekly basis with my selections but what can I tell you? ‘It’s only rock and roll, but I like it’
This first theme (for me), to coincide with Halloween, is ‘Scary’, and since I’ve already quoted a Stones lyric, I’m going to stay with it, because when I saw this week’s topic this is the first song that came to my mind: Jagger/Richard’s ‘Midnight Rambler’:
Everybody got to go
Did you hear about the midnight rambler
The one that shut the kitchen door
He don’t give a hoot of warning
Wrapped up in a black cat cloak
He don’t go in the light of the morning
He split the time the cock’rel crows
The one you never seen before
Did you see him jump the garden wall
Sighin’ down the wind so sadly
Listen and you’ll hear him moan
Talkin’ about the midnight gambler
Everybody got to go
Well, honey, it’s no rock ‘n’ roll show
Well, I’m talkin’ about the midnight gambler
Yeah, the one you never seen before
It’s not one of those
Well, talkin’ ’bout the midnight, sh,
The one that closed the bedroom door
I’m called the hit-and-run raper in anger
The knife-sharpened tippie-toe…
Or just the shoot ’em dead, brainbell jangler
You know, the one you never seen before
Coming down your marble hall
Well he’s pouncing like a proud black panther
Well, you can say I, I told you so
Well, don’t you listen for the midnight rambler
Play it easy, as you go
I’m gonna smash down all your plate glass windows
Put a fist, put a fist through your steel-plated door
He’ll leave his footprints up and down your hall
And did you hear about the midnight gambler
And did you see me make my midnight call
I’ll steal your mistress from under your nose
I’ll go easy with your cold fanged anger
I’ll stick my knife right down your throat, baby and it hurts!
Back in the day, I was the proud owner of the Stones’ live album ‘Get Yer Ya Yas Out’ and this was one of my favourite tracks. Recorded in New York In 1969 this is, in my humble opinion, the greatest ever live rock album (even better than the Who’s ‘Live At Leeds’, and that’s saying something). Of course it’s on Youtube:
It must be years since I last listened to this, but I just have, and it still sounds amazing. And scary.
Good choice
I’ve never been a huge Jagger fan, but I did appreciate this song. It was better than I thought it was going to be, to be honest. 🙂 And super creepy… watch out for that midnight rambler!
Also, welcome! It’s so good to see that Song Lyric Sunday is catching on. I hope to see more amazing song picks from you in the coming weeks! Happy Sunday!
Love it!
