Song Lyric Sunday: September Baby – ‘Deboraarobed’

Along with the literally hundreds of artistes I have never heard of, there are certainly some heavy hitters among those born in the month of September. There’s Bruce Springsteen, Leonard Cohen and Bryan Ferry for starters, as well as two members of the Grateful Dead – one still with us (Micky Hart) and one long gone (the mighty Pigpen).

And there is also Marc Bolan. I like to believe that I was in pretty early with my appreciation there – certainly long before he glammed up and became T Rex.

Prior to that, as many will know, he was half of Tyrannosaurus Rex – a duo (with Steve Peregrine Took) that eluded most of the traditional genre descriptions: I reckon that ‘psychedelic folk’ would be about as close as you could pin them down.

I owned both of their first two albums, the snappily titled ‘My People were Fair And Has Sky In Their Hair… But Now They’re Content To Wear Stars On Their Brows’ and the marginally more approachable ‘Prophets, Seers And Sages:The Angels of The Ages’ (both 1968).

‘Deboraarobed’ is the opening track on the second of these. As simply ‘Debora’ it had been a minor UK hit around the time of the first album’s release. Observant readers may notice that it’s a palindrome, which is not unrelated to the fact that the second half of the track is basically the first half played backwards. Ah, those were the days.

Dug and redug and dug and redug, redug
Dug and redug and dug and redug, redug
Dug and redug and dug and redug, redug
Dug and redug and dug and redug, redug

Oh Debora, always look like a zebra
Your sunken face is like a galleon
Clawed with mysteries of the Spanish Main
Oh Debora

Dug and redug and dug and redug, redug
Da-da-da-da-da-Debora
Dug and redug and dug and redug, redug
Da-da-da-da-da-da-da

Na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na-na-naah

Dug and redug and dug and redug, redug
Dug and redug and dug and redug, redug

Oh Debora, always dress like a conjuror
It’s fine to see your young face hiding
‘Neath the stallion that I’m riding, Debora

Da-da-da-da-da-da-da
Dug and redug and dug and redug, redug
Da-da-da-da-da-da-da

  1. This is so much my era … what a great song … and the lyrics… hardly flattering but I would of been happy with them but my name is not Deborah…

A great choice …he died a horrible death too soon πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ
