I like this idea of featuring, for the first Song Lyric Sunday of each month, an artiste or songwriter who was born in that month. However, as usual, I needed to resort to the web to check out a list of March birthdays. But I didn’t need to trawl very far down the list to make my choice for March, because on March 2 1948 Rory Gallagher was born.
‘Who?’ you may ask. Well, Rory has been described as ‘the greatest guitarist you’ve never hear of. That’s always an open debate of course, but I was horrified to discover that he didn’t even make it into Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 greatest rock guitarists.
I actually saw him live, when he was the front man for a group called Taste’ at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 He was phenomenal, especially when playing the blues.
The video shows him playing his iconic battered Stratocaster in one of his own compositions, during what was this first solo performance after Taste disbanded (the usual ‘artistic differences…)
Like a cat that’s playing with a ball of twine that you call my heart
Oh but baby is it so hard to tell the two apart
and so slowly you unwind it ’til I fall apart
I don’t mind waiting for your love for of time
I’ve got plenty of rain or shine
Please bring out your love make it shine like the stars above
Like a cat that’s playing with a ball of twine that you call my heart
Oh, but baby is it so hard to tell the two apart
and so slowly you unwind it ’til I fall apart
I’m only living for the hour that I see your face
When that happens I don’t wanna be no other place
‘Til the end of time you’ll be on my mind
I don’t mind waiting for your love,
for of time I’ve got plenty of
Rain or shine please bring out your love,
make it shine like the stars above
I’m only living for the moment that I hear your voice
Oh, I’m waiting
I don’t have any choice and the day is long
So won’t you come where you should be
Like a cat that’s playing with a ball of twine that you call my heart
Oh baby, is it so hard to tell the two apart
and so slowly you unwind it ’til I fall apart.

Great choice – I haven’t heard this for many a year!
While the name of the band Taste and his name are both familiar to me, I cannot remember why- it was definitely not this song – although I enjoyed it immensely.
