My word, but this is a Song Lyric Sunday challenge that makes me feel old. Jim wants us to furnish him with a song from a winner of the Grammy for Best New Artist. Looking through the list, there could really only be one of more than passing interest for me.
Apparently, Jim himself feels the same, because he too has gone for Crosby, Stills and Nash and chosen a track from their eponymous debut album, released in 1969. They picked up the Grammy the following year.
Fortunately though – as with ‘Tapestry’ a couple of weeks ago, our selections differ. Mine is his solo track written and performed by writer David Crosby alone.
Guinnevere had green eyes
Like yours, mi’lady, like yours
When she’d walk down through the garden
In the morning after it rained
Peacocks wandered aimlessly
Underneath an orange tree
Why can’t she see me?
Guinnevere drew pentagrams
Like yours, mi’lady, like yours
Late at night when she thought
That no one was watching at all
On the wall
Do, do, do …
She shall be free
As she turns her gaze
Down the slope to the harbor where I lay
Anchored for a day
Guinnevere had golden hair
Like yours, mi’lady, like yours
Streaming out when we’d ride
Through the warm wind down by the bay
Yesterday
Seagulls circle endlessly
I sing in silent harmony
We shall be free
Written by David Crosby
They seemed to do pretty well without Neil Young, on this great album especially
David Crosby felt that this was his best song, but it is very difficult to play and get the harmonies in sync. Great choice and I really enjoyed listening to this.
