Song Lyric Sunday: Departed – ‘Summertime’

This week, Jim is looking for a song from an artiste (or artistes) who is no longer with us. Sadly, there are far too many to choose from, but here is a performance by one who, along with Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison, succumbed to the 1970 curse of being 28 years old. There’ll never be another Janis Joplin.

Summertime, and the living is easy.
Fish are jumping, and the cotton is high.
Oh, your daddy’s rich, and your ma is good-looking.
So, hush, little baby, don’t you cry.

One of these mornings you’re gonna rise up singing.
Yes, you’ll spread your wings and you’ll take to the sky.
But ’til that morning, there’s nothing can harm you.
Yes, with daddy and mammy standing by.

Summertime, and the living is easy.
Fish are jumping, and the cotton is high.
Oh, your daddy’s rich, and your ma is good-looking.
So, hush, little baby. Baby, don’t you cry.
Oh, don’t you cry.
Don’t you cry.
Oh, don’t you cry.
Don’t you cry.

  1. Wow, it was great to hear this again. George and his brother Ira Gershwin along with Heyward Du Bose wrote this classic ‘Summertime’ for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess.  What I like best about this song, is that it allows the listener to find their own message in the lyrics.  To me, this song is about life and you have to take the good parts as well as the bad, as you just can’t have it one way.  There will always be ups and downs and you may not be ready for them as they will creep up on you when you least expect them.
