The theme for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday is to post something from a Scandinavian artiste(s).
I can’t be the only one who’s first thought was Abba – nor, I suspect, the only one who thought ‘Nah: try harder”. So who else is there? Bjork from Iceland, of course; that heavy rock group from Finland who won the Eurovision Song Contest a few years back; Roxette also from Sweden (Jim’s choice) – and plenty more, according to Jim’s lengthy list. My bad.
In the end, I decided to go for Norway’s finest: A-Ha. There is a sort of reasoning behind this choice. Back in the mid-eighties, Madame and I went to visit her sister, who at the time lived in Norway (her husband was in the oil industry).
To get to where she lived it was necessary to take an internal flight from Oslo. We boarded and settled down near the back of the ‘plane. After a few minutes, we couldn’t help but notice that the locals seemed unusually excited about what was, after all, a pretty short and routine flight.
We asked a passing stewardess what all the fuss was about and she told us that Morten Harket had just boarded – seated at the front, obviously, out of our sight. In response to our blank looks, she explained that he was the lead singer of A-Ha. At least we’d heard of them, almost wholly because of this song,
And that, ladies and gentlemen, represents the sum total of my knowledge of Norwegian pop.
Talking away
I don’t know what I’m to say
I’ll say it anyway
Today is another day to find you
Shying away
I’ll be coming for your love. OK?
Take on me (take on me)
Take me on (take on me)
I’ll be gone
In a day or two
So needless to say
Of odds and ends
But I’ll be stumbling away
Slowly learning that life is OK.
Say after me,
“It’s no better to be safe than sorry.”
Take on me (take on me)
Take me on (take on me)
I’ll be gone
In a day or two
Oh, things that you say. Yeah.
Is it life or just to play my worries away?
You’re all the things I’ve got to remember
You’re shying away
I’ll be coming for you anyway
Take on me (take on me)
Take me on (take on me)
I’ll be gone
In a day or two

Great choice absolutely brilliant πππ
Excellent selection! I’m surprised no one chose this great song already. It’s perfect for this challenge.
This song has such a catchy beat, thanks for choosing it.
I love the story, the song, and the video, one of the first I remember watching on MTV. The trifecta!
