Song Lyric Sunday: Sustenance – ‘Galadriel’

“Oh what it is to be young”

This week’s theme for Song Lyric Sunday is to find a track from a band with a food-related name. My immediate thought was Humble Pie, but – much as I liked Humble Pie – I thought that was too obvious. My next thought was The Electric Prunes, but I featured them at the beginning of this year. Quandary. I finally settled on Barclay James Harvest – it seemed particularly appropriate for this time of year.

I remember hearing this sweet little song in my early seventies student days when, like most of my friends, I toted the thick yellow paperback edition of Lord Of The Rings in my army surplus combat jacket.

Relistening now, half a century later, it perhaps sounds a little twee. But oh what it is to be young indeed.

She comes up with the morning sun
And tells me life has just begun
Oh what it is to be young

And in the early evening light
She brings me flowers from the sun
Oh what it is to be young

And if you see her you will know
She’s like a shadow
Falling softly on the snow

And in the early evening light
She brings me flowers for the night
Oh what it is to be young
